Mathilda tells Léon that she is 18, though she is clearly prepubescent. Due to her traumatic formative experiences, she believes that she has "finished growing up" and "just getting older".

The movie really made me feel attached to the characters and I was sad when Leon died, because I would've liked for him and Mathilda to run away together and live the rest of their lives by each other's side. However, Leon sacrificing himself to kill the person (Gary Oldman) that killed Mathilda's brother is still a fantastic ending.

That's his emotional side and he's not killing Mathilda because of that side. That's not a moment of him being the titular Professional, following his code. That's him failing to be professional because Leon is also humane. yes that's what I meant when I said moral, it's his sensitive and human side that he hides behind his killer status.

S. Golden. Leon (played by Jean Reno) lives in New York and is a professional hit man. One of his neighbors, Mathilda (Natalie Portman), is a 12-year old girl with family problems, one of which is that her father is a petty criminal. One day, a drug kingpin, Stansfield (Gary Oldman), kills her entire family due to something her father did.

The relationship between Leon and Mathilda is a rather complicated one, and is pretty much the cornerstone of the whole movie. Leon is hinted to be mentally challenged in some capacity. He can't read and despite his prowess as an assassin is very naive and is easily fooled by Tony (and Mathilda).

Mathilda has nobody in the world following the violent demise of her familial clan. And the finely-tuned, but socially awkward, Léon has little concept of companionship. His protective urges when she is talking to a youth on the street, or her wanting to play 'shooting people' with him, reflect a troubled yearning no matter how you spin.
